If you have the addon MSN Messenger Plus, and after being prompted to upgrade the version to the most recent one in Windows Live Messenger you find out you seem to have lost all your contacts, meaning that they dissapeared from your contact list. This issue is pretty common and most of the time is related to cookies and temp files that just show the upgraded MSN version, but not the information stored in the MSN servers. Follow the guide below to solve this problem.
How to get back all the contacts that dissapeared after upgrading MSN Messenger Plus or WLM official version.
- First of all, to verify that your contacts are still in your Windows Live Messenger account, sign in to any online IM, like Meebo. You will see that your contacts have not been deleted.
- You must delete all files in the following folders, the paths are different for Windows XP and Vista, but they are detailed below. Since some of the are hidden folders make sure to un-hide them and type the full path correctly;
- Restart Windows and sign in to msn messenger again.
For Windows XP, delete everything in the following folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\
C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Call\
C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Messenger\

C:\Windows\Temp\MessengerCache\
For Windows Vista/7, delete everything in the following folders:
C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\
C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows Live Call\
C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows Messenger\
