Many users don’t know how to display the menu bar in Windows Live Messenger, which is widely use to add emoticons. There is one quick method that opens the bar to the Tools, Contacts, File tabs, and the other method checks the option to fix the menu bar, both in conversation screens and the main msn window. - Click on your name, right below the avatar pic, and in the dropdown menu, check the option “Show the Menu Bar” (you can find it almost reaching the bottom)

- Below the chat box, there’s a series of icons like emoticons, send files, etc. On the right hand side, you will see a >> button. Once you click on it you will the option to show the bar.
