How to Re-Activate / Turn On Links again on MSN Messenger 2009

The official version as to why Microsoft disable active links for MSN Messenger 2009 was to prevent the spread of viruses or worms through links even when users are offline. These messages with links coming from offline contacts have long been in Windows Live Messenger, so my thoughts are, Microsoft is trying one more time to get you to update to Windows 7 (and install WLM 2011), which doesn’t have links turned off by the way.  If you think you are smart enough to distinguish a malicious link from a regular link sent from an online contact, read these msn tips below to enable links again.

How to Make Links Active and clickable on Windows Live Messenger 2009.

  1. You first need to download an editor to alter a msn file. It’s called XVI32.
  2. Log out from WLM 2009 and exit the program from the task bar.
  3. Open the program you downloaded and with it open the file msnmgr.exe , locate in C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger
  4. In the menu bar, click on search >> find, and look for hotlinks.
  5. Once it finds the word, you need to change the h for another letter, I chose the b. So it should look like botlinks
  6. Save the msnmgr.exe file you just modified.
  7. Open MSN 2009 again.

Notes.

  • Copy the msnmgr.exe file out of Program Files and move it to your desktop, edit that file and then put it back in the Messenger folder, that way you avoid the administrator permissions.

  • kexmester says:

-> now its ok i just needed to rune the program as an admin

  • Marska says:

Didn’t really help me with windows 7. Didn’t find that “hotlinks” from my computer.

    • admin says:

Did you download XVI32 and performed the search using that specific program?. Did you try with hotlink (without the S) instead?

      • Marska says:

Yap tryed. I’ve tryed everything I can imagine. the thing is, I don’t know it’s working right way and that the program works the same way in win7 than in others.

        • admin says:

The program does work the same way. However, the file that you are opening might be the one that is different. Try with the file msnmsgr in the same folder.

        • Xaphoon says:

Works on Windows 7. Run XVI32 as admin.

  • G-Tech says:

    Works! Awesome!

  • Danail says:

Where the heck is “hotlink” in Windows 7 anyway? I searched the whole computer and still cannot find the “hotlink” thing. Give me some help around here. What is that extension of that “hotlink” file .exe .dll …what?

    • admin says:

“hotlink” is not a file, but a word that you search using the indicated program above, it’s called XVI32. Again, the word “hotlink” is found within the msnmgr.exe (or msnmsgr) file, and should only be opened with the aforemencioned program.

Thank you, I couldn’t stand copypasting every freaking link -.-

  • Chris... says:

    Totally Wicked…

It seems stupid of MS to apply this policy (rather late in the game i might add) to prevent the clicking of links.

IMHO, if you click a link without even thinking about it then you probably deserve all you get and probably should not be using a computer in the 1st place

  • Julius says:

Thank you!! I had been trying to do this and failing but it was the copying the file to my desktop that got it to work for me. Now I got my links back, so appreciated. Thank you!!!!
